Add New York Sing-A-Long to Your Next Event

New York Sing-A-Long is a delightful way to celebrate a birthday or anniversary ... to energize a monthly meeting ... to raise money ... to galvanize a benefit.

We bring the piano player (and more instruments if desired), song sheets, and a warm, dynamic leader. You'll be amazed at the energy, nostalgia and fun that arises when a group is asked to sing along with America's great old songs.

Events can be tailored around specific themes (Turn-of-the-Century, Valentine's Day, automobiles, romance, "spooning," World War II), eras, years ... and the songs don't have to be real old, either. We've noticed that "seniors" love to sing along to the songs they love and remember ... but we've also seen younger people jump right in, as long as they know the material.

In this day and age, communal singing is virtually a thing of the past (although there are sing-a-longs to "Mama Mia!" and "The Sound of Music," for instance). Before we forget how to gather together and share a communal experience -- and particularly now that times and finances are uncertain -- it's prudent to book economical New York Sing-A-Long to help your party or event be the one that everyone remembers.

Please send inquiries to shepleypr@aol.com, or call Michael Shepley at 212-786-9064 today. Fees vary depending on the number of instruments and the size of the crowd.

We look forward to singing with you very soon.

Thanks, songlovers!

Warm thanks are extended to all 30 of the brave souls who showed up at the Bowery Poetry Club for the "Old New York Sing-A-Long" on Sunday (11/23). We had some glitches and oddities, but we sang with fervor and enjoyment, and many delightful comments were received. There are lots of ways to make it better, including the use of more recent material. (By that I mean more stuff from the 1930s, 40s and 50s, and less from the 1890s.) If you want to be put on a list, drop an email to shepleypr@aol.com, and we'll contact you about the next one. Happy harmonizing!

“OLD NEW YORK SING-A-LONG”

TO LIFT STRESSED AND SENIOR SPIRITS

SUNDAY, NOV. 23 AT 2 P.M.

“The Bow’ry, the Bow’ry!/They say such things, and they do strange things/On the Bow’ry!, the Bow’ry!/I’ll never go there anymore!” – from “The Bowery” by Charles H. Hoyt and Percy Gaunt (c. 1890)

The Bowery will ring with the sounds of a joyous pre-Thanksgiving sing-a-long geared to older New Yorkers who remember the songs of the early 20th century, as well as to anyone looking to shake off the economic glooms.

Old New York Sing-A-Long, the first in an anticipated series of sing-a-long events for adults in New York City, will be held on Sunday, Nov. 23 (2008) from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at the Bowery Poetry Club & Café (First Street & Bowery) in Manhattan. Individual tickets will be sold at the door (no advance sales) for $10 (cash, credit cards and checks accepted). A full bar and café will be open one hour before the show and during the performance.

“I extend an invitation to sing together to New Yorkers willing to happily recall American songs that are in our collective DNA – songs which, if we don’t sing them soon and now, may disappear from our culture altogether,” said Michael Shepley, the producer and host of the event.

Songs will be drawn from the popular American songbook – “And The Band Played On,” “Bicycle Built for Two,” “Ain’t We Got Fun,” “Side by Side,” “The Bowery,” “Alice Blue Gown,” as well as songs from the 1920s and 30s. Accomplished pianist John Halsey will provide accompaniment, and singers will assist in leading the audience in song.

“It is a particular comforting to gather together and sing during times of upheaval and change,” said Shepley. “We wish to harness the energy, joy and enthusiasm of people who hold this music in their hearts – and who might even wish to share it with younger family members.”

The Bowery Poetry Club has many different events per week for all kinds of audiences. This event is designed to attract anyone old enough to remember old songs, or anyone who wants to sing them. If you include yourself in such a group, you will not feel out of place.

The space is on the street level. We will have access to a street-level handicapped restroom for men and women. The Club's regular restrooms are down stairs, but our patrons do not have to use them.

Music will be performed live by an accomplished piano player, John Halsey. There may be some surprises (fun, of course).

Your input into the event is welcome. Experience will dictate what to add and what to subtract for future events. Please email Michael Shepley with your comments and suggestions.
